- Differences between trade fairs and other marketing tools
The main features that differentiate trade fairs from other marketing tools are as follows: They are an key sales platform where supply and demand come together at a specific time and in a specific place, facilitating meetings and business (quality audience). They also make it easier to develop personal contacts and, with the product being accessible, you can observe customer reaction. The constructive mindset of both exhibitors and visitors fosters a positive atmosphere. Trade fairs have become BUSINESS CENTRES, both because commercial transactions take place there and because they are the nerve centre of other relationships within the sector/s involved. Setting up joint ventures and joint industry strategies, international cooperation initiatives, market research and product testing are just some of the activities that have found their natural home in trade fairs.
- What do trade fairs offer that other marketing tools don’t?
1.COMMERCIAL EFFECTIVENESS: Trade fairs rank second in terms of efficient sales processes, just behind sales teams (according to a report published by the Center for Exhibition Industry Research-CIER in the U.S. in 1998). Their unique features make trade fairs a marketing tool that promotes and accelerates sales processes.
- COST SAVINGS:Attending trade fairs offers considerable cost savings for two reasons: the sheer number of buyers and suppliers in the same place at the same time and the many different marketing initiatives that are rolled out ahead of the fair: sales, advertising, promotion, PR and market research.
3.INFORMATION RESOURCE: According to a study carried out by Simmons Market Research Bureau (1997), trade fairs are the most effective way of gathering information as they provide a two-way flow of information (supplier-customer and vice-versa). Trade fairs are therefore the ideal platform for analysing new trends and discussing problems with other industry professionals.
Why go to Feria Valencia?
Feria Valencia is Spain’s pioneering exhibition venue and has since its inception been a benchmark for the exhibition industry both in Spain and internationally. Feria Valencia is Spain’s leading exhibition operator in terms of the amount of space available for exhibits, services, the number of trade events held, the number of international events held and the fact that it hosts the biggest and most prestigious events held in Spain, etc. Feria Valencia is a dynamic, innovative institution that is evolving all the time in line with new market needs and circumstance: it constantly refreshes its offering by creating new events and adapting existing ones to the industry’s current drivers. It is a model of participatory management that combines an understanding of the relevant industry and the involvement of businesses in that industry with Feria Valencia’s experience in managing and organizing events. Also, Feria Valencia’s location is unique, at the heart of the most highly developed area of the Mediterranean, whilst Valencia benefits from a modern infrastructure that provides fast access to the rest of the peninsula and to Europe. The expansion plan created Spain’s biggest and best exhibition centre: 230,000m2 of exhibition space designed in line with innovative architectural criteria that reflect both exhibitors’ and visitors’ needs. Feria Valencia chose the urban option for its site, which stands just 5 Km from the centre of Valencia, and has invested heavily in making it convenient for exhibitors and visitors to get to the venue. ISO 9002 quality certification is an endorsement of Feria Valencia’s professionalism and excellence as a venue and it is the first in Spain to have gained the ISO 9002 certification from AENOR.

What are the benefits of attending a fair at Feria Valencia as a visitor?
You will be able to gather a huge amount of information of all sorts in a very short space of time, which will give you an overview of the market. You will also have the opportunity to find out what is new in the industry by attending demonstrations and presentations of new products and/or services, whilst gaining an in-depth understanding of the industry’s specialist offering and comparing prices and technical features across exhibitors. Attending parallel events (conferences, seminars etc.), exchanging opinions with experts and other industry agents will give you an insight into current trends. You will be able to examine products before buying, see technical solutions to existing problems and requirements and find ways of applying them to your products. Lastly, the fair is an opportunity to see current suppliers, contact others, find new suppliers operating in the sector, make contact and set up collaborative networks with other agents in the industry and weigh up whether to come back to the fair as an exhibitor.
How can I achieve the best outcomes from making the trip to Feria Valencia?
STAGE 1: Approximately three/four months in advance, set out what your objectives are. Gather information about the fair: ask the event manager for details of the sectors of industry being represented at the event, exhibitors, parallel events and so on, and for a copy of the visitor leaflet. Plan your trip; book accommodation. Decide what means of transport you want to take and make the relevant bookings. If you will be coming from outside the European Union you will need to prepare your passport and/or visa. Complete the pre-mail (Advance application for a trade visitor registration card)
STAGE 2: Approximately two months ahead, draw up a daily plan: set up a schedule for contacting exhibitors at the fair. Decide how much time you want to devote to other activities: other commercial visits, touring the different halls to see new products and suppliers, find out what is on offer and what the trends are, attending parallel events. Draw up a questionnaire that will serve as a script for your meetings with exhibitors – you can use it to jot down important information. Book any translating and interpreting services you may need if you do not speak the languages of the exhibitors you will be meeting.
STAGE 3: About one month before the fair, contact the exhibitors to set up your meetings. Check you have received invitations you expected to receive (if not, request them). Create contact record cards or forms: company name, name of the person you spoke with, location within Feria Valencia (Hall and stand numbers), time of the meeting, etc. Register, if necessary, for any of the parallel events your company is interested in.
STAGE 4: After the fair: Contact all potential new suppliers that are of interest. Review the information you have collected and compare the various alternatives offered by the different suppliers. Assess the results.
How do you fulfil your expectations as a visitor to a trade fair?
In order to assess the value of having visited a trade fair you need to reflect on a number of points that help provide an accurate assessment of the results obtained and that will enable you to take corrective measures ahead of future fairs. Visiting a trade fair should not be left to chance. You should set specific objectives and plan your visit well in advance. Visiting a fair does not necessarily deliver immediate results; the benefits of attending also become apparent in the medium and long term. Prioritise your meetings: if you need to visit exhibitors in order of interest, it is very important that you plan in advance how much time you will spend with each of them. It is useful to take notes about the products and their features – price, payment method, guarantees, technical support etc. – in order to be able to evaluate the various options later. It is advisable to attend the parallel events (seminars, workshops, congresses etc.) and product presentations to get up to speed with the latest trends and developments in the industry. You need to make a general assessment of the results based on all the benefits of having attended the fair. As well as orders placed, other, added value aspects need to be borne in mind such as ideas you have had that can be applied to your business, the opinions that have been shared and the contacts made at the fair, having seen the products ‘in the flesh’ as it were, having seen new products etc.
